2. CALL TO ACTION: STOP EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH
Last week on our radio program I promised listeners we’d be sending out more details about the latest push in Congress to expand government-sponsored embryonic stem cell research.
During July, after a period of debate, the Senate will be voting on Senate Bill 471, “Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005,” (was passed by the House in 2005 as HR 810). This bill would cast off all restraints to federally (a.k.a. taxpayer) funded Embryonic Stem Cell Research…such spending was limited by President Bush in 2001 (a policy that limited the use of federal funds to only those embryonic stem-cells to lines in existence before 2001).
This bill should be rejected for two primary reasons. First, the federal government has no Constitutional authority to be spending taxpayer monies on such activities. Secondly, Embryonic Stem Cell Research is immoral and not consistent to America’s founding principle that our government was organized to protect the right to life.
Keep in mind that this bill only pertains to eliminating the restraints Bush signed into law in 2001. Embryonic Stem Cell Research in the private sector has no limits whatsoever. [Christian Patriots’ long term goal is not only to prevent federal (and state) spending for Embryonic Stem Cell Research, but to pass laws that would ban private spending on this immoral activity as well.]
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are found in all animals, including human beings. All 210 varieties of human tissue originate from stem cells. There are two types of stem cells used in research today:
"Adult" stem cells are derived from existing tissue in the adult body; there are no adverse effects when harvested.
"Embryonic" stem-cells are taken from live human embryos, killing the embryo in the process.
Researchers indicate that these cells can provide -- and in the case of Adult stem-cells are providing -- new treatments for everything from heart disease to cancer to spinal cord injuries. To date there has not been a single successful treatment derived from Embryonic stem cells where Adult stem-cells are successfully being used in over 70 different types of treatment.
What are the ethical concerns raised by stem-cell research?
Adult stem cells are obtained through a simple procedure that does no harm to the donor, allowing living human beings the opportunity to make a potentially life-giving gift. Embryonic stem cells can only be extracted at the cost of killing that embryo.
Besides the moral dilemma of killing a living embryo, there is the moral challenge to face a situation where human lives might be created (the embryo) with the sole intent later to destroy such human life, in order to harvest the stem cells.
Our nation was founded upon the premise that God gives mankind the right to life. Our Founders affirmed this in the Declaration of Independence and elsewhere. How can our government find a moral justification to fund programs to create life, with the clear intention to then destroy that life -- no matter how "compassionate" the act might be called?
TAKE ACTION:
Call your two Senators today and urge them to oppose Senate Bill 471, and while you’re at it, let them know that you also wish to see legislation proposed to eliminate any private Embryonic Stem Cell Research as well.

At a recent news conference, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) introduced several people miraculously cured or helped by adult stem cells.
Cathy Pell told reporters her daughter was treated with her own cord-blood stem cells for brain damage suffered during birth."She is the youngest in the United States to have had this procedure done for a brain injury," she said. "Most of the damage was in the frontal lobes. She never made eye contact with anyone. Two weeks after the procedure, she looked up at me after her bath and locked eyes with me for the very first time."
Jacki Rabon received an adult stem-cell treatment for her spinal-cord injury. "I was in a car accident about three years ago," she said. "I became a paraplegic, and the doctors had told me I would never ever be able to walk again. I went to Lisbon, Portugal, to have an adult stem-cell surgery done in October. It's more than six months since I had the surgery. I have increased feeling in my hip muscles, and they have allowed me to walk again. I have leg braces I use to walk, and I walk with a walker and on parallel bars."
Ryan Schneider was diagnosed last summer with cerebral palsy at 2 years old. His mother, Mary, had been wise enough to bank his cord blood after birth. Ryan was treated with his own stem cells by a doctor at Duke University. He's now symptom-free."He's blown the socks off his therapist at Easter Seals, his pediatrician, his neurologist and his neurobehavioral psychologist," Mary Schneider said.
Stephen Sprague was cured from chronic leukemia through a transplant of stem cells from his own cord blood. The miraculous cure came after Sprague was told by doctors he would not survive.
