ACTION ITEM: JUDGE ROBERTS CONFIRMATION
ACTION ITEM: JUDGE ROBERTS CONFIRMATION
(by Tim Ewing, Founder, Rare Jewel Magazine)
On our radio program yesterday I promised listeners that we’d email out contact information for all 18 Senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee (see below).
Although most organizations who diligently work to restore America’s Christian foundation have come out in support of Judge Roberts, there have been a few conservative commentators (e.g. Ann Coulter) who fear his lack of “paper trail” is an unknown we should not overlook lightly.
As my good friend Rev Rob Schenck, founder of Faith and Action and a Judge Roberts supporter, mentioned, “…a careful, deliberate and comprehensive confirmation process will tell us a lot more.”
Sandra Day O’Connor was on the wrong side of too many badly decided 5-4 Supreme Court decisions. Replacing her with a Justice who will interpret the Constitution in the spirit that it was originated, as Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers advised, would mean future 5-4 decisions would swing in Christian Patriots’ favor.
The sooner confirmation hearings begin the better. President Clinton’s two Supreme Court nominees averaged 58 days between nomination and confirmation (compared to an average of 72 days over the past 30 years). Prior to Roberts’ nomination, in unprecedented fashion, the White House consulted with Senators from both parties -- more than 70 Senators, including every member of the Judiciary Committee and more than two-thirds of the Democrat Senators. A Republican-controlled Senate should be able to avoid any delay tactics.
Yet we should not let them think otherwise even for a moment.
TAKE ACTION!
Below you will find contact information for each Senate Judiciary Committee member. From each Senator Senator’s website you will find email information. Email, or call whether they are from your state or not. For added measure, also call the Senator’s home office nearest you (available on their website).
Share with them these three things, and remember to be respectful:
1. Provide your name, city, and state.
2. Ask the Senator to begin Judge Roberts’ confirmation hearing in mid-August -- there is no need to delay.
3. Remind the Senator to confirm only federal judges who are committed to interpreting law based upon the original spirit of the US Constitution and who will NOT invent new meanings from its text.
This confirmation process will be a battle of two competing views: strict-construction versus the living constitution. The former position accurately explained by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), “The only litmus test the Senate should consider is Judge Robert's loyalty to the Constitution and its strict construction.”
The latter viewpoint will use a litmus test per John Kerry’s mandate in his July 11 email to his supporters, “Let's make our principles crystal clear right out of the box. We will never support a Supreme Court nominee intent on reversing Roe v Wade.”
ABOVE ALL, WE MUST PRAY
The Bible commands us to pray for our civil leaders. Ask God to use this opportunity to fill this Supreme Court seat in a manner that will help restore America’s Christian foundation.
